BECKLEY, W.Va. - With just three weeks until All Hallows Eve, Mountain State University is gearing up for some "spook-tacular" events starting this weekend on the Beckley campus. The community is invited to participate in a crime solving event, a haunted house, and costume contest within the month.
Starting this weekend, MSU's Sigma Alpha Omega - Criminal Justice Club will host "MSU: Solve the Crime," a real life version of the popular board game Clue. At the event, participants will be challenged to solve a crime with possibilities of winning prizes.
"MSU: Solve the Crime" will be held October 8-9th and October 15-16th from 6pm to 12am at MSU's O'Dell Hall located at 210 Minnesota Avenue in Beckley. Tickets can be purchased at the door with admission being $5.00 for MSU students (with current ID) and children ages 6-12. Tickets are $10.00 each for those ages 13 and older. With the purchase of an adult ticket, children ages 6-12 play for free.
Twenty percent of all proceeds will benefit underprivileged children in southern West Virginia. For more information on "MSU: Solve the Crime," call club advisor, Nelson Staples at 304-929-1567.
On October 13, 2010, MSU's Forensic Investigation Association will open the doors to their annual Haunted House. The event consists of 8 extreme scenes and will take place at the MSU Forensic Crime Scene House located at 703 South Kanawha Street in Beckley.
The haunted house will be open through October 31st. Doors open each night from 7pm to11pm, Monday - Wednesday and 7pm-12am, Thursday - Saturday. Within the month, the house will be closed a limited number of days: Oct. 17, 20, and 24.The house will also be closed on Sundays with the exception of Halloween night, October 31st.
Tickets are $8 each, Monday - Wednesday and $10 each, Thursday – Saturday and Halloween night. Admission for MSU students with student ID is $5.00. A special $2.00 discount will be given for admission on October 22nd and 23rd with a canned food donation for MSU's Students in Free Enterprise team fundraiser. At the month's end, MSU will hold a Halloween costume contest at its season opening men's basketball game on October 30th. The MSU Cougars will take on Glenville State at 4pm at the Beckley-Raleigh County Convention Center. Admission to the game is $5.00. MSU students (with current ID) get in free.
The costume contest will take place at half-time with $400 in prizes to be given away courtesy of City National Bank and Little General Stores. Three age divisions have been set up for the costume competition. The "Small Spook" division will be for those ages 0-7, the "Creepy Kids" division for ages 8-17 and "Big Monsters" for ages 18 and over.
The contest will be judged by a four person panel and will include Martin Staunton, news anchor for WVNS-TV, Jesse Dawson, radio personality and program director for The Ticket-WMTD FM. Dr. Wayne Wormley, dean of MSU's Doctoral of Executive Leadership Program and Mary Riner with MSU's Alumni Association.
